Intervention throgh NGO T.E.P.E.:

NGO T.E.P.E.: the only non-profit organization that take care of the children in La Otra Banda. The children can visit and stay at the organization for free. Their goal is to increase the quality of life for children who come from poorer families in the neighborhood. The center is open in the morning hours because it wants to aim children who go to school in the afternoon (usually a sign of lower class).
Families (people of La Otra Banda): from the statistic gather in La Otra Banda, we can tell, that women are in slight majority in this city quarter. In the living room of La Otra Banda the proportions between male and females are almost equal, however women tend to be in slight majority.
The children are huge group of the inhabitants in La Otra Banda. The citizens in age from 0 to 17 constitute over 65 percent of all inhabitants in this city quarters. People in productive age (from 18 till 64) constitute only around 20 percent while elderly around 15 percent. From those statistic we can tell that children with their families (and most important mothers) are very important stakeholders in the region.
From the statistic we also find out that most of the people in La Otra Banda (around 60 percent) is working and another 5 percent are actively looking for a job. Big percent of the inhabitants in La Otra Banda in the statistics is marked as occupationally inactive (around 35 percent). To this group can belong the elderly who reached their retainment age and most probably women – mothers, who decided to become stay home mothers and take care of their children or have unregistered occupation, e.g. selling newspapers, cleaning cars, etc.

The NGO T.E.P.E. is to our knowledge the only private actor who deals with social family issues in La Otra Banda. It would be important to build on the work the T.E.P.E. has already done and is still doing and support the NGO in their further work and help them find ideas for new approaches and financing of their projects.
Right now that T.E.P.E. finances its project with the money from different foundations, for which they need to apply. In order to receive the money the NGO must fulfill certain criteria required by particular foundation. The project must consider specific social issue what limits the T.E.P.E. in their work. The NGO would like to be more independent, receive independent foundating to carry out project they hold as important and not necessary the ones which fit into criteria of the foundations.
The first step in the approach would be to find alternative financing sources for T.E.P.E. One of them could be fundraising by private persons. It is important to remember that foundrising is approach that don't bring the profits straight away but needs time to develop. That is way it would be important for T.E.P.E. in the beginning of the process not to relay completely on this form of financing, but to still apply for founds. In the first year only small project could be finance with money received from the donors. The complete fundrising strategy can be develop after approving of this approach in the Morita team.
Using the money from fundrising, T.E.P.E. could introduce some new projects that would lead to strengthening of the families (e.g. through reducing or eliminating domestic violence) and empowerment of women in La Otra Banda. Examples of possible new projects:
1) domestic violence prevention
2) sexual education at schools for female students (protected sex, providing condoms for female students, what are other methods of anti-conception, how can the girls have access to it)
3) sexual education/consultation in schools or outside of it. It lead to higher age when the women get pregnant and through that increase their education (women stay at school).
4) free medical care (e.g. once a month) in relation to sexual health
Women are the homemakers. If the house is to be strong and resilient, the women need to be strong and empowered. The women who are involve with T.E.P.E. could organize one of the festivals in La Otra Banda (women and children festival?).
During the festival T.E.P.E. could display their different projects, which on the one hand could work as advertisement and on the other spread awareness of different social issues in the neighborhood. The festival could also be used to collect donation for further work of the NGO.
